How Karate Helps with Bullying
Karate works on both sides of bullying. A child who lashes out gets a healthy outlet for stress and anger, and learns self-control instead of acting on it. A child who is picked on learns to carry themselves without fear, because confidence in their own ability replaces it.
Classes for Their Age
Children train in three age groups on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, plus an all-ages kids' class on Saturday morning.
Ages 5 to 7
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Short sessions that begin with the basics: standing still, listening, bowing and the first simple movements.
Ages 8 to 11
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 5:15 to 6:00 pm. Longer sessions, with more technique, the first kata and controlled partner work.
Ages 12 to 16
Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 6:15 to 7:15 pm. Older children work closer to the adult syllabus, with conditioning and sparring introduced as they progress.
Your First Lesson, Step by Step
Get in Touch
Use the button below, email us at victoriashorin@gmail.com or telephone 250-744-7761. Tell us your child's age and we will point you to the right class.
Come in a Little Early
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class so your child can look around and meet the others. If they would rather watch the first one than join in, that is fine.
Wear Something Comfortable
Loose clothing and bare feet are enough for the first lesson. No uniform or equipment is needed until your child decides to stay.
Decide Afterwards
The week is free and there is nothing to sign. If your child enjoyed it and wants to keep going, we take it from there.
Who Teaches the Children
Crucial to your child's progress is the integrity and ability of their instructor: someone who walks the walk, and the kind of martial artist you would want your child to become. The children's classes are taught by James Rault Kyoshi, who has trained for 33 years and taught students of every age for the past 15. He is a certified master instructor.
- 7th Dan in Shorin Ryu Karate and 5th Dan in Ryukyu Kobudo
- Certified master instructor (Shihan) with 33 years of training
- Board Chairman of the Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate Shinkokai
- Age-grouped classes, with conduct and safety part of every lesson
What Parents Ask Us
If your question is not answered here, email us at victoriashorin@gmail.com or telephone 250-744-7761 and ask us directly. We are happy to talk it through before you decide anything.
Children can start from five. Classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday are split into 5 to 7, 8 to 11 and 12 to 16 year olds, so your child trains with others their own age. The Saturday morning kids' class is open to all ages.
Many children are quiet when they first arrive, and nobody is pushed into the middle of the room. They start at the edge, copying what they can, and most settle within a few weeks. You are welcome and encouraged to stay and watch.
Karate is a contact art, but the children's classes build up gradually: the early years are form, footwork and conduct. Sparring is introduced in the oldest group only when they are ready, with protective equipment worn. Nothing is done at speed before it is done correctly.
Loose clothing and bare feet are enough to start, and no uniform is needed until your child decides to join. When they do, we will tell you what to buy and where.
Up to four kids' classes, taken in your child's own age group during the week you choose. No obligation.
Traditional Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate. You can read more about the style on Wikipedia.
